Chris Barnes, tuba, is a charter class member and graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy. He attended the University of Michigan where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music, and was a member of the Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Marching Band and Men’s Glee Club. After graduation he moved to Washington State, taught music for 5 years in the public schools and then attended Western Washington University where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Conducting.
Chris’s musical experiences include performances with groups at Lincoln Center, The Academy of Music, Symphony Hall and Eastman Theater, among others. He was a member of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club that went around the world on a concert tour culminating in the International Eisteddfod in LLangollen, Wales where the club competed and was awarded 3rd place in the men’s choir competition. He has also toured extensively throughout the United States with both vocal and instrumental ensembles.
In addition to the Seattle Wind Symphony, Chris plays locally with the Washington Wind Symphony, Brass Band Northwest, Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Festival Orchestra, Greenwood Concert Band, Pacifica Tuba Quarter and Sonare Brass Quintet. He has also played with Lake Union Civic Orchestra, Puget Brass (where he was also the conductor for a number of years), Cascade Symphony, Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra, Everett Symphony, Whatcom Chorale, North County Oratorio Society and the Vancouver Bach Choir.
Chris works as a Network Administrator for Ryther in Seattle.
